Martin Hinteregger unexpectedly retired from professional football in July 2022 at the age of just 29. The reason: revelations about his links to a far-right fraternity member in his Carinthian homeland. Hinteregger had organised a football tournament together with the controversial Heinrich Sickl. The club distanced itself immediately.
Hinteregger denied any political sympathies, but withdrew from public life. For Eintracht fans, who had adored him as a crowd favourite, his exit came as a shock.
